On the morning of May 12th, 2026, Dr. E Deng, Ms. Roxanne Liu, Mr. Guang-Zhi Zeng, Mr. Huan Yue and Mr. Shang-Qi Zhou of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, travelled to the Hong Kong Observatory Headquarters (HKO) to engage in an in-depth discussion with Dr. Danice Ng, Scientific Director, and Mr. Raphael Lui on typhoon simulation methods based on weather research and forecasting models (WRF). Other participants included Mr. Kwok-Kit Yam, the Technical Secretary and Ms. Lina Chan, a structural engineer, both from the Buildings Department (BD). This meeting serves as a progress meeting with government departments for our TRS project.
During the meeting, Mr. Huan first introduced the WRF data assimilation method, which integrates data from multiple data sources including HKO wind measurement stations, the LiDAR network from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the Himawari-9 satellite. Mr. Zeng then presented WRF simulation results under the impact of climate warming. Finally, Dr. Deng gave a detailed presentation on the findings of the WRF idealized experiments.
This meeting received significant attention from both HKO and BD. HKO expressed strong interest to cooperate and proposed providing detailed meteorological data so both sides could jointly conduct simulation studies on more than ten typhoons with unique trajectories that previously caused significant impacts on Hong Kong. The goal would be to further determine the characteristics of wind field variations during typhoons in the Northern Metropolis.
